One big premier and three more SXFantastic Screenings:

The Big Premier is Alan Berg’s Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW, which is true to its name in following the four people responsible for the festival we’re now basing our entire lives around.

“In 1980, four guys living on next to nothing started a regional music conference in Austin, Texas.  They had no money, little experience, and low expectations. South by Southwest has grown from 700 attendees in its first year as a music-only festival to over 36,000 participants in 2010 for its expanded music, film and interactive festivals, achieving a global significance far beyond what the founders had dreamed. The festival’s massive and rapid success also drew backlash, criticism, and even arson, as the outsiders became the insiders. Outside Industry: The Story of SXSW goes backstage to show how this unprecedented music phenomenon became the most important music industry event in the world. The film features rare footage of rock legends such as Iggy Pop, Johnny Cash and Lucinda Williams and interviews with the four founders and key players in the history of SXSW.”

The premiere is TODAY, Wednesday, March 16th at 4:30PM at The Paramount

Director Alan Berg and special guest SXSW Director and Founder Roland Swenson (barring any emergencies) will be participating in a Q&A following the screening.

COLD SWEAT – Second Screening at Alamo Ritz, 3/16 @ 11:30 PM.  Q&A To Follow With Director Adrian Garcia Bogliano

Synopsis: What do you do if you are a right-wing Argentinean terrorist and your state-sanctioned organization is disbanded?  We can’t say, but it involves chatrooms, bare breasts and a generous slathering of nitro-glycerine.

LITTLE DEATHS – Third Screening at Alamo South Lamar, 3/16 @11:59 PM. Q&A To Follow With Directors Sean Hogan and Simon Rumley

Synopsis: A provocative, cutting-edge horror/thriller that explores the lives of three couples who are immersed in twisted games of psycho-sexual obsession and revenge resulting in a price, which inevitably must be paid.
KILL LIST – Buzz Screening at Vimeo, 3/16 @10:00 PM

Synopsis: Eight months after a disastrous job in Kiev left him physically and mentally scarred, ex-soldier turned contract killer, Jay, is pressured by his partner, Gal, into taking a new assignment. As they descend into the dark, disturbing world of the contract, Jay begins to unravel once again – his fear and paranoia sending him deep into the heart of darkness.

You have to love it when a band gives its local fanbase a leg up. The Band of Heathens’ new album, Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son, is being released nationally on March 29th. But us here in Austin are getting it two weeks early; it is available in this city now. Because of that The Band of Heathens are playing a CD release show at Antone’s tonight, March 15th. Matt the Electrician is also playing. Doors open at 7 and show starts at 8 pm.

Keep on enjoyin’ SXSW, Austin!

Co-financed by Exclusive Media Group and RCA Records and produced by Spitfire Pictures in association with Allentown Productions, a feature-length documentary on superstar American rock band Foo Fighters, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth, will premier tonight at the Paramount Theater at 6 PM. The film is directed by Oscar and Emmy-winner James Moll.

The doc chronicles the 16+ years of the Foo Fighters’ career. Or, as the release puts in, “From the band’s very first songs created as cassette demos Grohl recorded during his tenure as Nirvana’s drummer through its ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum, arena and stadium headlining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.” Footage of the band creating its new album is liberally sprinkled into the runtime, as well.

The Foos’ frontman, Dave Grohl, says it best: “In October of 1994, I walked into Robert Lang’s Seattle studio with a guitar, a drum set, a bass, and 14 songs I thought nobody would ever hear. 5 days later I walked out with the first Foo Fighters record. 16 years and 7 studio albums later, with the help of Academy Award winning director James Moll, we’re finally able to tell the story of how that one demo cassette turned into the band that we are today. This is our side of the story. From the first rehearsal, to the completion of our new album, it’s all there. Through hours of interviews with all members of the band past and present, we tell you the truth and nothing but the truth. So help us Lemmy. Giving James mountains of never seen before footage, and unlimited access to the recording of the new record, the film presents an insight to the band never seen before (even to some band members!) and shows the process of making our new album, in my garage, totally analog, to 24 track tape machines. No computers. No auto-tune. No drum machines. Just real rock and roll. For me, it’s like watching my life flash in front of my eyes. Except with a mouth full of popcorn and Hot Tamales.  Hope you dig it. It’s been a wild 16 years…here’s to 16 more.”

Stay tuned to AME for more SXSW updates!

Plutopia Productions’ signature SXSW event is in its fourth year and the 2011 headliner is experimental New York City act Text of Light. The band’s roster includes Sonic Youth’s Lee Renaldo, who I’m sure you’ve heard of, backed up by experimental wizards Ulrich Krieger, Alan Licht and Tim Barnes.

Onstage, Text of Light will “improvise soundtracks” as the work of late avant-garde maestro Stan Brakhage plays behind them. It will be trippy and cool.

The “Future of Play” event is an overstuffed circus of gaming, music, toys, performances and art. The general idea is to create an uplifting sense of racing toward the future. The event’s parent company, Plutopia Productions, is a vehicle for “sense events” that interact with visitors via multi-sensory performances and stimulation. Honestly, it sounds like a bit too much to handle in one paragraph. I’d imagine it’d be easier to wrap your mind around in person.

And you can do that at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River Street) from 6:30 PM ’til midnight.

These two screenings are both part of the SXSW 2011 slate for SXFanatic. The FP is getting its second screening at the Alamo Ritz late tonight at 11:30 PM.

The plot summary (thanks to FonsPR): “Accompanied by his brother JTRO, Beat-Beat Revelation champion BTRO must compete for the pride of their hometown, Frazier Park (The FP). His opponent: ruthless fighter and trash talker, L Dubba E. L Dub not only defeats BTRO, he sends him to an early grave. L Dub’s instant climb to power has forced The FP to fall into disarray. Crazed with anger, JTRO vows revenge. After a crash course in the ancient techniques of Beat-Beat from master BLT, JTRO challenges L Dubba E. Their battle to the finish, born of lust, power and revenge, will leave only one man standing.”

Go here to learn more, such as why the characters’ names are JTRO and BTRO (which was my first question).

The second film, Jez Jerzy, is going through its international premier tonight at the Alamo Lamar right before midnight at 11:59 PM. It is about its titular lead character, a skateboarder hedgehog who likes to laze around town and “fondle breasts.” Although the guy is no superhero, he has to do battle with Neo-Nazis, mad scientists and evil clones. All so he can just skateboard.

Madison/New York group will begin their stay in Austin for the SXSW 2011 Music Festival tonight. They are planning on releasing a new album later this Summer,  so tonight’s show at the Seaholm Power Plant will probably feature material unfamiliar even to fans. The show is officially titled the Pepsi Max Foursquare Concert.

Locksley are currently enjoying the success of leadoff single “The Whip,” which was featured in both this year’s Super Bowl and the hit animated comedy Rango. They will be sharing the Pepsi Max stage with Big Boi and The Sounds. The show starts at 8 PM.

Other Locksley performances this week:

Tue 3/15 @ CNN Grill (Max’s Wine Dive – 207 San Jacinto) @ 3 pm
Wed 3/16 @ Black and Tan (405 E. 7th St.) @ 12:30 AM Wed Night
Thu 3/17 @ MTV Garage (Parking Garage across from Stubbs) @ 2:10 pm
Fri 3/18 @ Key Bar (617 W. 6th St.) KAMX Party at 12:30 pm (acoustic set)
Sat 3/19 @ The Gingerman (3rd and Lavaca) @ 2:15 pm

………………………………………..

New Austinite (and native New Zealander) Jackie Bristow will play another show tonight for the SXSW coronation of her album Freedom. At 1 PM today she will be part of a series of shows at DMI House (219 West/219 W. 4th Street).

Other Bristow shows:

Wednesday, March 16, at Darwin’s Pub for the RedGorilla Music Festival at 3:30 PM. Later that same day she’ll play at Aussie’s Bar & Grill for “Down Under Sounds” at 8 PM.

Then on Friday, March 18th it’s back to DMI House for a 3 PM gig.

Saturday, March 19th at Rusty Spurs for Smoke and Sand at the acoustic stage. Show at 1:30 PM for all you early risers.

The momentum of Austin’s hard dance funk/rock quartet The Bright Light Social Hour toward a major label deal continues as the band does the week of SXSW up big time with a series of shows and the releases a new EP on iTunes.

The group’s performance schedule is as follows:

Sun 3/13 – Do512 Presents: URDB World Records @ The Highball (free w/ RSVP)
Mon 3/14 – SXSW Film – Austin Chronicle Film Bash @ La Zona Rosa
Wed 3/16 – The Navigational Society & Good Danny’s Day Party w/ White Denim @ The Parish (free)
Fri 3/17 – SXSW – KUT Official Showcase w/ Givers @ Momo’s
Sat 3/18 – Do512 and Shiner Present: The Big One 2011 @ Hotel Vegas (free w/ RSVP)
Sat 3/18 – 29th Annual Austin Music Awards @ Austin Music Hall

So they’re gonna be tired on Sunday. Meanwhile, Bright Light’s four-song New Year’s Live EP is now available. Recorded at the group’s New Year’s Eve show at the Parish at the end of January 2010, the short player features two previously unreleased tracks; they are covers of blues classics “Mannish Boy” and “Young Man Blues.” Videos of those two songs are also part of the EP package. New Year’s Live was released on March 8th and can be bought here.

Stay tuned to AME for more SXSW updates during this crazy week!
