The 10th Anniversary edition of Austin City Limits Music Festival descends on Zilker Park September 16-18, 2011. The three-day, eight stage music extravaganza will feature over 130 bands including headliners Stevie Wonder, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Kanye West, My Morning Jacket, Manu Chao La Ventura and Fleet Foxes. With so much so much to see, hear and taste, here are the important logistics and tidbits to keep you in the know!
STATEWIDE BURN BAN: Like most of Texas, Austin is suffering one of its worst droughts in history and a burn ban is in effect for the City of Austin and surrounding areas. ACL Festival is asking patrons to be hyper-vigilant and use extreme caution during the Festival weekend. The Transportation and Austin Police Departments will be issuing warnings, citations and towing illegally parked cars along Mopac and Ceasar Chavez.
ACL PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR WILDFIRE RELIEF: Each day from 10am-6pm at the Volunteer Headquarters across from the Barton Springs entrance of the festival, patrons will see ACL volunteers, Red Cross of Central Texas and Texas Wildfire Relief volunteers taking donations to assist victims and firefighters affected by the wildfires in Central Texas. To get the ball rolling, the Do Good Bus, Foster the People and other artists playing ACL Festival will be stopping by to meet ACL do-gooders. TICKETS: There are still a limited number of Sunday tickets available for $90 each. These can be purchased online at www.aclfestival.com, or at the Festival Box Office located on Barton Springs Road. Three-day passes for the Festival sold-out prior to the announcement of the Festival’s lineup in May. Fans should sign up on the ACL Festival email list by September 19 to score pre-sale access to 2012 Early Bird tickets.
WEBCAST: Fans worldwide who can’t make it to Zilker Park can still enjoy the ACL experience on YouTube. The live webcast, sponsored by Dell and AMD, will feature Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Alison Krauss& Union Station, Nas& Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, Bright Eyes, Cut Copy, Pretty Lights, Big Boi, Iron& Wine, Foster the People and many more. EARLY WRISTBAND REDEMPTION: Three-day pass holders can redeem their tickets and Print Passes for wristbands in advance at the Festival Box Office between Sunday, September 11 and Thursday, September 15 from 12-8pm each day, and Friday September 16 through Sunday September 18 from 10am – 10pm. Early redemption will also take place at Republic Square Park on Friday September 16, 10am – 6pm and, for out of town guests, at Austin Bergstrom Airport on Thursday September 15, 12pm – 8pm and Friday September 16, 10am – 5pm. Even better than saving time at the gates, redeem your wristband early and you’ll be entered to win a pair of VIP Passes! One lucky festival-goer will win daily during the early wristband redemption period (Sunday 9/11 – Thursday 9/15).
GETTING TO ACL: There is no parking at ACL Festival. Fans are encouraged to use eco-friendly transportation, including the free shuttle at Republic Square Park, cab sharing, walking and biking. Bike parking is available at each entrance, as well as bike repair from Mellow Johnny’s. Do not park vehicles on grassy areas. ACL urges fans to be respectful of the neighborhoods surrounding Zilker Park by keeping noise to a minimum and disposing of trash.
BAG AND CHAIR CHECK: Visit the American Airlines Bag and Chair Check and they will stow your bag and chair for free.
HYDRATION: Patrons are allowed to bring two factory sealed water bottles (up to 1 liter each) into ACL Festival each day. Patrons can also bring an empty refillable container or CamelBak and fill up at the free, triple-filtered CamelBak Filling Stations. H2O natural spring water will be available at any Festival bar for $2. With its eco-friendly paper packaging, you can refill it at a water station, or just flatten it and recycle.
HEAT RELIEF: ACL Festival is dedicated to keeping patrons safe and cool. This year’s blazing temperatures have been taken into account throughout the festival production. Festival organizers have added 11,000 square feet of shade structure, an additional misting station, and increased the number of free water dispensers by 50%. Festival producers have also increased medical personnel and the amount of supplies used to treat overheating.
WHAT PATRONS SHOULD KNOW: Patrons should keep a close eye on their health and their friends on these hot days. Heat stroke can be identified by excessive thirst, lack of urination, headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, disorientation, agitation, flushed or hot skin, loss of consciousness or seizure. However mild the symptoms, fans should visit the Medical tent or flag down a Festival staff member for assistance.
FOOD: Curated by Hudson’s on the Bend’s Jeff Blank, Austin Eats continues to feature fantastic local restaurants putting their spin on festival fare. Fan
favorites such as the infamous Mighty Cone, Tim Love’s Love Shack, Austin’s Pizza, and Torchy’s will serve up the best in festival eats alongside newcomers, Maudie’s, Odd Duck Farm to Trailer, Mandola’s Italian Market and Daily Juice.
HOPE FARMERS MARKET: Another way to stay healthy and hydrated at ACL is to eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Hope Farmers Market returns with fresh, local, artisanal options to satisfy the health conscious eater as well as vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free diners.
GREENING: ACL’s commitment to the environment is integrated into every area of the park. Each trash can includes a recycling bin. Austin Eats has both front and back of house composting, and food vendors are required to use eco-friendly plates, napkins and utensils. Throughout the park, there is a ban on Styrofoam, plastic bags and flyers. Festival merchandise comes in organic and eco-friendly options, and uses biodegradable bags when bags are requested. Festival producers offset the carbon dioxide emissions of festival vehicles, generators, shore power, staff and this year, artist travel, by purchasing certified carbon offsets from Green Mountain Energy. ACL engages 200 volunteers a day who are dedicated to greening efforts.
GREEN FANS: Fans can participate in the greening of ACL in a number of ways. This year, they can purchase Certified Carbon Offsets from the Green Mountain Energy booth in ACL Cares, to make their festival experience carbon neutral. Fans can make small, but effective choices to recycle their cans and compost food waste. They are also encouraged to participate in the Rock and Recycle program, where filling just one bag of recyclables earns them a commemorative, Five Bamboo organic T-shirt, and a chance to win a bike available only to program participants.
ART AT ACL: The Art Market is a terrific place to discover local artists and artisans with a proven commitment to the planet and the people on it. From recycling and “upcycling”, using the best environmental and fair-trade practices, these artisans demonstrate just how beautiful making the right choices can be. Tom’s Shoes will return to the market for the sixth year to continue to add to the 2,400 pair of shoes given to children in need by ACL fans. The market also includes the ACL Festival Boutique, where shoppers can find the complete line of official goods.
ACL CARES: Musical, social, environmental and health advocacy causes will have an audience of 70,000 people per day at ACL. ACL fans can support the local music community through Austin Music People, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and SIMS Foundation, and ensure music education for Austin youth through Anthropos Arts and Grounded in Music. Fans can also Rock the Vote, join the largest community garden on the planet through Shared Earth, and even save a life. Love Hope Strength’s “Get on the List” campaign to build the international marrow database has found three bone marrow matches at ACL. ONE Campaign will be fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, primarily in Africa.
NATURE CONSERVANCY: ACL has partnered with The Nature Conservancy this yearto spread the word about our mounting water woes and how we’re going to fix them. Visit The Conservancy booth to grab a limited edition ACL T-shirt when you sign up to become a member, snatch a raffle ticket to win a Hurley double kayak, and score a wacky personal cooling device (think Otter Pop meets Pat Benatar and the Karate Kid) to beat the heat.
AUSTIN PARKS FOUNDATION: The Austin Parks Foundation is the presenting sponsor of Austin City Limits Music Festival, and a beneficiary of a portion of ticket sales. ACL is proud to support the Foundation in education, advocacy, and ecological restoration projects across Austin, including the Barton Creek Greenbelt, The Shoal Creek Greenbelt, The Bull Creek Greenbelt, and the Zilker Preserve.
IPHONE& ANDROID APP: In addition to maintaining your schedule and listening to ACL Radio, the new and improved app is fully integrated with GroupMe, allowing fans to create custom SMS text groups to message their friends for meet ups. Also, fans using the ACL app won’t have to wait in line to buy merch. The whole festival store will be available from their smart phone. The app is free and downloadable from iTunes.
AUSTIN KIDDIE LIMITS: Kids get the star treatment at ACL. Whether they want to build a sandcastle, make a music video, paint a masterpiece, learn how to beat box, or get a stylin’ faux hawk and tattoo, there’s no end to the family fun. The Austin Kiddie Limits stage has a rockin’ lineup, and every so often, a special guest! Children 10 years old and younger are free to the Festival with a ticket-holding adult
COOL DOWN AND CHARGE UP: The Dell Lounge will be blasting the A/C and broadcasting the live webcast, so fans don’t miss a beat while charging their phones and electronics.
WIN A FREE HONDA: At the Honda Zone, the brand new Civics have been turned into photo booths, and one lucky festival goer will win an all-new 2012 Civic Si Coupe!
‘HANGOUTS’ WITH ARTISTS AT THE GOOGLE + LOUNGE: Visit the Google + Lounge to join the Google + project, snap a photo in the photo booth and catch a Hangout with an ACL Festival artist.
MRS MEYERS: Mrs. Meyers deliciously fragrant soaps will be available for your hand-washing pleasure at two custom sinks, in the VIP Grove and Austin Kiddie Limits.
WIFI Google+ is offering free wifi at specific locations around the park. Hot spots are marked on the ACL Festival map online and in the handout as well as on the official ACL Festival app.
ACL COMMEMORITIVE MERCHANDISE: ACL will offer two commemorative poster designs to honor the tenth 10th anniversary. Artist Tad Carpenter’s poster pays homage to Austin and is offered in a single silk-screen edition. Artist Felice House’s joyful interpretation of ACL Festival will be offered in three editions, ranging in price from $30 – $425. Both posters are limited edition and will not be re-issued once sold out. Available at both on-site store locations and through the web store.”
